DIY Interior of a Two-Story Townhouse in St. Petersburg

Back in 2018, amidst the rise of DIY blogs, the INT2 studio created this experimental living space and received the well-deserved ADD AWARDS. Six years later, we decided to take a closer look at the interior. And now, from the perspective of a new reality...

The self-made furniture of the Soviet era, when there were no trends or brands, was replaced in the 90s and 00s by the ability to buy everything that appeared on the covers of glossy magazines. Now, observing the reverse process, it seems curious to reflect on the breadth of human thought even under significant restrictions on foreign markets.

This project is one of the exemplary examples of creating an interior by oneself, using basic tools and vintage elements that can be found at any flea market, then adapting them to one’s needs and seamlessly integrating them into a new environment.

A specially designed version of the Fringe tile by Mutina has adorned the floors of Red Jane Bakery in the heart of Chania on the island of Crete.

The versatile and simple pattern of the Fringe tile features relief stripes in two colors. Here, burgundy-terra cotta alternates with white in the public area, while soft beige is paired with white in the establishment's workspaces.

These color combinations were chosen not only for stylistic reasons. In the visitor area, the contrasting relief will make shoe marks from rain less noticeable, while on the light floor in the kitchen areas, flour marks—which tend to cover all surfaces in bakeries—will be less visible.

Designer and partner at Norm Architects, Frederik Werner, created a magnificent home for his family by completely renovating a building from 1917. Frederik drew inspiration from Japanese aesthetics and paid great attention to detail. Light, materials, and respect for the historical elements of the building are the core values of the studio's architectural style, fully adhered to in this project as well.
